UK Retailers express a certain sense of caution in their statements when commenting on the year ahead, while online retailer, Asos have said how they expect their profit from the following year to be  "towards the top end of expectations".

Chief executive of the company; Nick Robertson said the group had approached the new financial year with "confidence" and was "excited" about its prospects.

While Asos show clear achievements through their increasing profits, UK retail sales suffer their worst fall on record since the records began in 1996.

The British Retail Consortium said that the total sales in March were down compared to last year by 1.9%, showing an evident sign of high street struggles.

Records showed that footwear was the only growth sector, as clothing, home ware, food, drink and electrical appliances all fell. Even though internet sales show their slowest growth since 2008, Asos still manages to achieve a great growth due to their successful over sea sales.

The BRC states that these issues are existent even though people are visiting the high street stores, yet, "Falling disposable incomes and the fear of worse to come means people don't want to spend.

"There are only so much discounts and promotions you can do to overcome that." Added BRC director general, Stephen Robertson.
